The criteria defining the size of groups and companies have recently been updated. Since March 1, new thresholds defined by the decree of February 28, 2024 have been in force.
Higher thresholds for companies and groups
The directive of October 17, 2023 modified the thresholds defining the size of companies and groups in line with inflation. These new thresholds apply to financial years beginning on or after that date.
The criteria for determining the category to which a company belongs have increased significantly. These are classified into several categories: micro-enterprise, small enterprise, medium-sized enterprise and large enterprise.
In 2024, the new thresholds applicable to companies are as follows:
- Micro-enterprise: 450,000 euros balance sheet total and 900,000 euros net sales;
- Small company: 7.5 million euros in total assets and 15 million euros in net sales;
- Medium-sized company: 25 million euros in total assets and 50 million euros in net sales;
- Large company: balance sheet total in excess of €25 million and net sales in excess of €50 million.
These changes apply to all categories of company. For example, the balance sheet total threshold has been raised from 350,000 euros to 450,000 euros, and the net sales threshold from 700,000 euros to 900,000 euros for micro-businesses.
In 2024, the new group thresholds are as follows:
- Small group: total assets of 9 million euros, net sales of 18 million euros and 50 employees during the year;
- Medium-sized group: balance sheet total of 30 million euros, net sales of 60 million euros and 250 employees during the year;
- Large group: balance sheet total in excess of 30 million euros, net sales in excess of 60 million euros and number of employees during the financial year in excess of 250.
These thresholds are taken into account in the preparation and certification of financial statements.
