Anytime/YouGov study
37% of French people have a source of income in addition to their job
More than 1 in 3 French people have a complementary source of income
- 37% of French people say they use sales, rental, delivery and/or other non-professional sales sites as an additional source of income;
- This trend is even more pronounced among 25-34 year-olds, 46% of whom favor the use of additional sources of income.
To the question "Which of the following sales, rental, delivery sites and/or activities are sources of income for you in addition to your salary?", Anytime and YouGov offered more than 20 answer choices.
Respondents could choose from sales sites or practices such as Leboncoin.fr, Ebay, Etsy, PriceMinister or even flea markets; rental sites between individuals such as AirBnb, Drivy, Ouicar, PAP, Koolicar, etc.; but also from sometimes complementary professional activities such as VTC services, Foodora, Hopwork and Deliveroo.
Leboncoin, the most popular site for making ends meet
- Leboncoin is by far the most popular sales site: 26% of French people use it to generate additional income;
- Ebay and PriceMinister, which sell new and used goods, are used by 9% and 7% of French people respectively ;
- Sales activities that are more rooted in local and neighbourhood life are also important: 9% of French people use garage sales and 6% flea markets to make ends meet;
- Airbnb is a source of additional income for 6% of French people.
Trendy in the city... as in the country
There is no typical profile of the French person who uses online or physical means as a complementary source of income: the proportion of French people who use this practice in villages, small towns and big cities is the same: 37%.
Nor does this trend seem to be linked to employment status, since among French people who declare they have a complementary source of income, 40% of respondents are working and 44% are not.
"Platforms stemming from the collaborative economy have boosted French people's initiatives to collect a regular or occasional source of income to supplement their jobs. 37% of these French people are what we call "entrepreneurs", i.e. people who have to manage more than just their daily expenses and earnings.
Like business owners, they manage their stock, contacts, free up time to sell or rent out their goods, and therefore, like pros, have specific banking needs to distinguish and better manage their accounts according to how they are funded. Many of them have a main account dedicated to housing their salary and fixed expenses, and a secondary account reserved for their complementary activity and pleasure expenses, for example", comments Damien DUPOUY, founder of Anytime.
Methodology: The survey was carried out on 1001 people representative of the French national population aged 18 and over. The survey was conducted online, on the YouGov France proprietary panel, using the quota method, from June 14 to 15, 2017.
