November 6, 2017 press release

Which connected objects do the French think are best suited to contactless payment? That's the question Anytime, the alternative or complementary account to banks for individuals and professionals, put to 1,006 people representative of the population.

Anytime/YouGov study

49% of French people consider smartphones suitable for contactless payment

Objective: to find out their views on contactless payment, and anticipate their future needs.

According to this study, carried out with YouGov between October 5 and 6, the three objects that French people feel are best suited to contactless payment are: the "contactless" bank card, the smartphone and the connected watch.

75% of French people consider the "contactless" bankcard to be the most suitable item for contactless payment. The "contactless" bankcard seems to be unanimously accepted, as it is still the most popular means of payment.

Smartphones came second in the poll: 49% of French people consider them suitable for contactless payment. Among 18-24 year-olds and 35-44 year-olds, the smartphone is favored by 55% (on both sides), compared with 43% among 25-34 year-olds.

The connected watch comes third: 15% of respondents consider it suitable for contactless payment, closely followed by the connected badge or key fob, which garnered 14% of votes.

"The use of contactless payment is set to accelerate, and the increase in the limit from €20 to €30 will cover almost 60% of transactions. To democratize the use of payment a little more, we need to imagine new ways of paying that meet very specific uses. Mobile payment seems unavoidable, because the mobile is an object that we always carry with us, and NFC technology allows us to dematerialize our plastic card. But tomorrow, new means of payment will emerge, such as payment bracelets, key rings, rings, pendants... anything that can be worn and carried. What makes this possible is a technological feat aimed at miniaturizing a contactless payment card", explains Damien Dupouy, co-founder of Anytime.

Summary of results

To the question "Increasingly, payment for goods and services can be made 'contactless', i.e. using radio waves and without using cash, or requiring a PIN code and signature. Which of the following items would you say is most suitable for contactless payment?", asked to 1006 French people:

  • Contactless bank card (75%)
  • Smartphone (49%)
  • Connected watch (15%)
  • Badge / Key ring (14%)
  • Bracelet (10%)
  • Connected glasses (2%)
